Anna Somfai

I am a researcher and teach at university, dedicated to pass on the knowledge and experience I have been fortunate to acquire throughout my studies, research and teaching. My key endeavour is to explore, reflect on and address the ideas and intellectual and emotional puzzles that come my way and to engage in the two main fields of my intellectual landscape: ancient Greek philosophy and medieval manuscript studies.

I teach ancient and medieval codicology, Latin palaeography, history and philosophy of science, philosophical and autobiographical text reading and organise workshops and summer schools in manuscript studies. My research focuses on visual thinking, the use of diagrams as cognitive tools and the concept of spatial and temporal infinity and continuity, conjuring up starting points from Plato’s Timaeus. Medieval manuscripts are central to my interest in that they connect my visual inquiries with my cognitive ones through offering an opportunity to study page layouts, intuitive and planned spatial arrangements, text image relationship and the cognitive processes of designing, creating and using the handwritten and handmade medieval book. I greatly appreciate the inspiration teaching, discussions and the shared experience of reading philosophical texts and studying medieval manuscripts bring into my life.

My scholarly work is embedded in a life based on a personal journey of philosophy and art. I paint, draw, do photography, make experimental short films, write poetry and prose, play musical instruments, practice yoga and spend much time wondering about in forests and meadows, imbued in nature and the insights it brings. I live in Budapest.
